Chagall 's paintings and ballet meet again.

This legendary stage performance is making a comeback after 83 years. Chagall 's stage backdrop for Ballet“Aleko” currently on display at Aomori Museum of Art, has been brought to life on a giant LED screen, intertwining with the physical expressions of spirited dancers. This fantastical collaboration between Chagall 's painting and ballet, reuniting across the ages, will bring you a truly fascinating performance.

Cast

Koya Okawa

Born in Aomori Prefecture. After graduating from the Moscow State Academy of Choreography with honors, she performed at Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet of Odesa, Kazan, and Novosibirsk in Russia. She won the gold medal at the 2017 Moscow International Ballet Competition. She moved to Japan in 2022 and is currently a Principal with the Asami Maki Ballet Tokyo.

Alexandr Trusch

Born Ukraine. After studying folk dance, she moved to Germany at the age of 12 and enrolled in the Hamburg Ballet. She joined the Hamburg Ballet in 2007 and was promoted to Principal dancer in 2014. She has played major roles in productions such as Lady of Camellias Swan Lake "Giselle, Nijinsky." She will be a guest principal with the Hamburg Ballet from 2025.

Ayano Teshigahara

She began ballet at the age of three and has studied abroad in Germany. She joined NBA Ballet Company in 2015 and will be promoted to Principal in December 2023. She is a talented dancer who will lead the next generation, dancing major roles in a wide range of works from classical to contemporary.

Kaho Yamada

She began ballet at the age of four and entered and graduated from Conservatoire National Superieur de musique et Danse de Lyon, France at the top of her class. She joined NBA Ballet Company in 2021 and was promoted to Principal in December 2023. She has won numerous awards, including first place senior division of the YAGP Japan qualifying tournament.

Work Description

What is Ballet“Aleko”?

Ballet“Aleko” is Narratives on the poem The Gypsies (1827) by the Russian literary giant Alexander Pushkin.

The music is an orchestral arrangement of Tchaikovsky 's Piano Trio in A minor, and the background paintings were by Marc Chagall.

The four background paintings were sold by the Ballet Theatre in 1977 and are now exhibited as artworks in Aomori Museum of Art the Aleko Hall.

In November 2024, Aomori Museum of Art will stage a new production of Ballet“Aleko” by Naoya Homan, breathing new life into the stage art once again after more than 50 years.
