Concept
Transcending a thousand years, the music heard by the Onmyoji (exorcists) now comes to life. Unraveling the soundscape of the Heian period from the world of manga.
—Into the World of Sound Heard by Onmyoji—How did people who lived in the Heian period perceive the world? Onmyoji (diviners) of that time provided insights into uncertain futures through divination and astronomy, and were involved in people's daily lives. This program focuses on the unique aesthetic sense of the Heian period depicted in the manga "Onmyoji," and invites you into the universe of sound felt by the people of Heiankyo. Enjoy a special musical experience where the rich musicality of Gagaku intersects with cutting-edge sound and visual expression.—The World of Sensibility Expanding Beyond the Manga—Rather than simply staging the manga, this program reconstructs the aesthetic sense and worldview of the Heian period felt by Abe no Seimei and Minamoto no Hiromasa, who appear in "Onmyoji," through music, video, and spatial direction. The world of sound and movement that could not be fully depicted in the manga unfolds as video in the space, and live Gagaku sounds are superimposed on it. Enjoy a new viewing experience that resonates with the world of sound that unfolds in the space, "immersing yourself in the aesthetic sense and worldview of the Heian period."

Performance details
Manga, literature, traditional performing arts—this project traverses different cultural domains to interpret the world of "Onmyoji" through gagaku (Japanese court music).
Reiko Okano's manga "Onmyoji," based on Baku Yumemakura's novel of the same name, was first published in 1993 and sparked a boom in interest in Abe no Seimei, continuing to captivate countless fans for many years. This performance reconstructs this representative work of historical fiction as a concert. It will feature a talk by Reiko Okano, a manga artist who has also worked to express the world of "Onmyoji" through physical expression, gagaku (ancient Japanese court music) by Reigakusha, and a performance by Ichiko Hashimoto.
This work fuses traditional Japanese court instruments such as the sho, hichiriki, and ryuteki with contemporary music and electronic sounds, creating a new form of musical expression where sounds from a thousand years ago and sounds of the present day intersect.
The musical pieces to be performed are taken from the CD album "music for Onmyoji," released in 2000. This album was created by Reigakusha, a gagaku (Japanese court music) performance group that performs a wide range of pieces from classical gagaku to contemporary works and even extinct pieces, and Brian Eno, a British musician, producer, and music theorist and pioneer of ambient music. These two different talents drew inspiration from "Onmyoji" and created this two-disc set incorporating the essence of Yin-Yang and the Five Elements. This will be the first performance since the CD's release.
"Sound Universe" is a soundscape created by the integration of visuals, music, and lighting.
Venue is Box1000, a state-of-the-art theater space equipped with LEDs across the entire stage. With the latest sound technology and scenes from the manga "Onmyoji" projected onto the screen, a new soundscape will be created where the sounds of the Heian period and the modern era, East and West, intersect.
Original story
Set in the capital of the Heian period, this story depicts the exploits of Abe no Seimei, a legendary onmyoji (exorcist), and Minamoto no Hiromasa, a master flutist, in a fantastical style. It won the 5th Osamu Tezuka Cultural Prize Manga Grand Prize in 2001 and the 37th Seiun Award in the comic category in 2006. A sequel, "Onmyoji Tamatebako" (7 volumes/Hakusensha), exists.
